Compare To と Compare With の違いはほぼないけれど…

Compare To と Compare With は、いずれも比較したい場合に使用し、明確な区別はないので、どちらを使ってもそんなに大きな間違いにはならなくなってきているとか。

しかしながら、微妙なニュアンスの違いとして、以下のような違いがあるようです。

Compare To

Compare Something/Somebody to Something/Somebody

A) Corey compared Eva’s running style with a gazelle’s.
B) Corey compared Eva’s running style to a gazelle’s.

これは (B) になります。
同じようなカテゴリー、似たようなものの比較。例えられるかどうかというようなニュアンスを含むということだそうです。

Compare With

Compare Something/Somebody with Something/Somebody

A) Compared with the amount of money the administration has proposed for defense, the cost of this program will be small.
B) Compared to the amount of money the administration has proposed for defense, the cost of this program will be small.

これは (A)。
比較した結果どうなるのか。という感じでしょうか。


 Compare To が似たもの同士、Compare With は比較そのもの…なのかな。
なかなか難しい。
